I've
broadcast from some bizarre places including a mortuary but this
is my first virtual under-the-ground broadcast.
Im
reminded of Al Jazzbo Collins' mystical broadcasts from the Purple
Grotto. He played great jazz and had an incredible imagination;
not long ago Jazzbo traded his world for another.
The
digital studio is in a side chamber overlooking the main gallery.
This cave-within-a-cave has rocky outcroppings that, because of
their odd shapes, seem to alter sound.
Certain
times of the year algae around the pond becomes phosphorescent.
Once, it went from blue-green to a cotton candy pink. Occasionally
I hear scratching and hopping soundssmall animals, I think.
I'm not really sure.
During Segues you might hear the piano of Ravel followed by Bill
Evans, who could easily slide into Ken Nordines Word Jazz,
which might lead to Hamza El Din? I never know what will be played
to create the next transition; perhaps, a pinch of Pink Floyds
Darkside, followed by a snort of Miles, a shot of Eric Dolphy, blended
with Glenn Gould, Salamat Ali Khan, a sound effect, Carlos Nakai,
Firesign Theater, who knows?
